Jerry Mills of B2B CFO® once told me on being interviewed, “Mark, I always ask the reporter what can I do to make them look good.” As a guy who used to be on the other side of the mic, that’s excellent advice. Looking for more sage advice when it comes to being interviewed?
Katrina Cravy Talks Shop on Getting Publicity
Katrina Cravy is a long-time TV broadcaster and knows a thing or two about the media.
Her 2018 book is On Air. The subtitle is Insider Secrets to Attract Media and Get Free Publicity.
And why does a CFO like books like this? Think cash flow. More of it. If your company has a marketing department or works with a PR firm, get this book in front of them. I cannot think of one small business who could not gain value from this book.
The Must H.A.V.E. Formula
I love a good framework or mental model. I even curate Quora’s, The Frameworks Fanatic with more than 1.6k followers. So when I stumbled upon Katrina’s H.A.V.E. formula, I immediately wrote it down. Now it’s indelibly etched in my mind.
The context for the H.A.V.E. formula is for people like you about to be interviewed by a reporter. But every writer and public speaker can apply this simple mnemonic to their work too:
- H is for having a great hook
- A is for audience benefit
- V is for visuals
- E is for engaging or energetic
The Audio Version is Excellent
The digital version pricing might be a turnoff, so consider the audio version instead. Plus, Katrina provides her own narration. Very well done.
This is an A-to-Z guide to the before, during, and after to getting media attention. Yet, it’s not boring with mindless facts. Every paragraph is full of sage wisdom. Plus, the author follows her own advice–she’s engaging.
If you do not think like a marketer, this is probably the last place you’d look for more cash. Use Katrina’s book to move the needle on getting more eyeballs on your product or service. Plus, the cost is next to nothing.
