I started my print subscription to HBR in 2006 and I also have digital access too. I have no desire to drop either. But do options exist not counting Inc., Forbes, or Fortune? My crack staff of one did the research and the pickings are slim. Accordingly, don’t drop that subscription just yet.
Top Alternatives to HBR (That are Similar)
- McKinsey Quarterly – I love their content, and I’m signed up for some of their alerts. There is plenty of content you can get for free.
- Strategy+Business – at a minimum, sign up for their newsletters and read what interests you. This publication has been around for a while, but I still like HBR better.
- MIT Technology Review – a bit tech-heavy, but great content.
- Insights by Stanford Business – is just ‘okay’ from my perspective. I skim their content about monthly, but it’s not in the same league as HBR.
- Knowlege@Wharton – probably deserves to be on this list, but I rarely look at the site.
- The Oxford Review – I learned about this publication when answering a similar question on Quora. Your HR team members may find bookmarking this site useful. Also, per a comment below, check out The Oxford Review’s blog. Thank you, Dr. David Wilkinson.
- The Economist – I wanted 7 publications on this list, so this stodgy, no-nonsense global reporting focuses on financial and business topics. Several peers say this is the only business publication they read. Their paywall is strict. Sign up for an account, and you can read 2 articles a week. If I wasn’t a faithful reader of the WSJ, I’d probably subscribe to The Economist (update, I’m now a subscriber).
- MIT Sloan Management Review – Props to Ted Kinni, a contributing editor, for this inclusion.
Don’t Forget Ted Talks
I want to give a shoutout and thumbs up to Andreas Limpak for suggesting Ted Conferences – good one.
Enter a keyword related to your profession, and I’m betting you’ll find anywhere from 3-5 presentations on the topic you searched. Should you do this, don’t forget to include TEDx in your search too. For clarification, TEDx is for smaller, grassroots events hosted in local venues around the globe.
Speaking of Ted Talks …
The idea from Andreas got me to thinking about Talks at Google. I’ve probably watched more of those than Ted presentations. Their speakers are the great thinkers of our day, but be prepared to invest your mind – you’ll find yourself taking notes on your favorite presentations. I also appreciate the Q&A segments.

Take a look at MIT’s Sloan Management Review, Mark. I’m a contributing editor and biased, of course, but think it’s a comer.

Ted, good call. I love your writing, so it’s officially on the list.

Thanks for asking. Do you mean this publication? I’ll be scrolling through articles over the next few weeks.
How do you like it?
Thanks!

Since I was grasping for the right words, I just typed “equivalent of Harvard Business Review” and did not expect Google to come up with relevant answers. Glad that this was top of the list. Thanks for the list, Mark! Found some new ones to check out.

Thanks!

A helpful post, thanks Mark. You reminded me to bookmark McKinsey Quarterly.
I’m also a fan of Project Syndicate ( project-syndicate.org ), CFA Institute Blog ( blogs.cfainstitute.org ) and the Minerva Review ( minervareview.com ).

Thanks a lot, I finally have access to great articles without having to pay for them had I subscribed HBR.
