I mostly read non-fiction. If it’s non-business related, I gauge a book on its quality and value based on whether I recommend it to family and friends. That was the case for Tara Westover’s, Educated, a Memoir, a beautiful, but painful story about a young woman on multiple journeys.

Think about the first business book you ever read. How did you stumble upon that title? I was doing audit work at a small TV station in Cape Girardeau, Missouri when my assistant recommended, Barbarians at the Gate. I loved it. The next book I read was also a referral by one of my bosses.

I’m a slow reader. I took an Evelyn Wood speed reading course more than 25 years ago. I learned a few techniques to read more efficiently, but I’m still a slow reader. Still, I can plow through a book about weekly. But there are a few books that take me a year to read.

I’m guessing there are thousands of posts on how to read faster. If you are old enough, remember those Evelyn Wood speed reading courses? I took one back in the 1990s, but I’m not so sure my reading speed increased significantly. Does that mean we’re all doomed to being slow readers? Not necessarily as there is hope for you.

I’m hooked on books. When I’m alone, I’m reading. When I’m driving, I’m listening to a book. On weekends while I’m working outdoors, I’m also listening to a book. While I’m waiting in line while buying family groceries, I’ll be reading from my phone. Yet, there are many great books I have not started.

Guy Kawasaki’s Top 10 Book List
I’ve long been a fan of Guy Kawasaki, and I’ve lost count how many times I’ve recommended his 10-20-30 speaking rule for those about to give presentations. By a long shot, The Art of The Start is my favorite Kawasaki book. I also like his memoir, Wise Guy which came out in 2019.
