If I were starting a coaching relationship with a financial leader, you might be surprised that the first homework assignment would not be a book. Instead, start by listening to Dan Sullivan.
I’m Not the Only Person Recommending Dan Sullivan
One of the best underrated small business books ever written is John Warrillow’s Built to Sell. I like how he ends the book in Recommended Reading & Resources:
- Join The Strategic Coach
- Follow Tim Ferriss
- Attend any Event Produced by Verne Harnish
That’s the short list as he has more suggested resources. Notice again his first recommendation–join The Strategic Coach. The Strategic Coach was started by Dan Sullivan who was probably the first professional services provider to put small business coaching on the map back in the 1970s.
Dan is the author of numerous books, but an audio series he created is my favorite resource.
Pure Genius is Pure Gold
I owe Gary Boomer a thank you. I first heard the name Dan Sullivan at a coaching event hosted by Boomer’s consulting firm in Kansas City nearly 20 years ago. So I started studying that name and came across an audio series available on Nightingale-Conant’s site. I immediately bought it and listened to it multiple times (more like devoured it).
I’ve lost track how times I’ve listened to Pure Genius. My kids have gone through it more than once. I’ve had select clients listen to it too–a few had their kids go through it.
My copy of Pure Genius is in CD format with 7 discs. The content is so basic, yet so insightful. Much of the material falls under the category of, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
Some of my favorite topics include:
- Unique Ability® – This is one of the foundational teachings at The Strategic Coach. You’ll also be introduced to the Kolbe A ™Index.
- Referability Habits™ – I never get tired of hearing this section. Say, “Please and thank you,” is the first
referability habit. Show up on time, do what you say you’ll do, and finish what you start. Pure gold. It just sounds better coming from Dan’s voice. - The Time and Effort Economy is a sticky concept that will be indelibly etched in your mind for the remainder of your life.
- Dan Sullivan’s time system of
free ,buffer, and focus days is introduced in the series.
Consider John’s Advice, Attend the Strategic Coach
Do you run your own firm? Consider Warrillow’s advice above, attend The Strategic Coach. I’d be remiss if I didn’t share a couple names whom I admire and respect in that organization:
Reggie Metzger – Senior Sales Consultant
Stephanie Song – 10x Program Advisor
Reggie and Stephanie are pros, and they are the best. They don’t sell, and they are certainly not pushy. They listen first, explain second. If you want to learn more about The Strategic Coach, reach out to them.
But don’t forget, listen to Dan’s Pure Genius.
