Let’s get something out of the way–this writer loves baseball. So how could I not be intrigued when I read about a former manager of my favorite team talking about books?
Mike Matheny is an Active Reader
In 2014, Mike Matheny told the Wall Street Journal that he’s an active reader:
- he highlights books extensively
- he fills margins with notes
- when finished, he goes back a second time putting his thoughts in a journal
Matheny agrees that leaders are readers which helps him in his learning process. His favorite books are:
- biographies of successful sports figures
- catalysts in the corporate and military world
And some of his favorite recent titles?
- Coach Wooden’s Greatest Secret
- Fight: Winning the Battles That Matter Most
- Leaders Who Last
One of my favorite comments is that he reads several books at the same time. Yeah, me too.
