“‘Classic’ – a book which people praise and don’t read.” – Mark Twain
1. What I’m Reading
- The Halo Effect has not reached classic status yet. Give it time, and it will be. With no disrespect to Mark Twain’s comment about the classics, this was my fourth reading of the book. This book should be required reading before any other business book is read.
- I just finished Kitchen Confidential. I didn’t really care for it. I wrote some notes on my key takeaways. His advice to chefs applies to us too.
- What were your favorite books in March? Here’s my list for the prior month. Tara Westover’s memoir is by far my favorite book in 2019.
2. What I’m Writing
Rebecca Knipp is quickly becoming a rising star in Columbia, Missouri as an outsourced CFO. I asked her to name several books by or about women CEOs as quickly as possible. Care to see her response? I enjoyed compiling this list, although it’s a short one.
3. What I’m Reading Beyond Books
Have you been accused of boiling the ocean? Or how often have you offered a view from 30,000 feet? Do you circle back to colleagues on unfinished projects? I enjoyed scanning the consulting lingo in this humorous article at Management Consulted.
I like the new look over at CFO’s site.
Finally, I enjoyed reading Eric Colson’s article about curiosity data science. He’s the CAO at Stitch Fix. He’s not the Chief Accounting Officer. Rather, he’s the Chief Algorithms Officer. You’ll want to share this with your CEO.
4. What I’m Watching
While doing research for a recent article about books written about and by women CEOs, I enjoyed watching this interview with Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook. Great discussion.
5. Homework Assignment
Please forgive, but this homework assignment will cost you about $20. I’m in the middle of a series
Thank You!
Thank you for reading. If you like the above and the posts at CFO Bookshelf, may I ask a favor? Feel free to share this with other readers along with commenting on your favorite blog posts in LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook.
Take care and have a great week. Always be learning.
