I love The Leader’s Bookshelf. It’s the perfect book for voracious readers. Near the end of the book, my favorite chapter is Reading and Leading, where the author offers priceless advice.
- Carve out time to read.
- Find the time to think after you read.
- Speak and write with simplicity and precision.
- Be humble and use humor often.
- Focus and prioritize, then prepare deeply for the key events.
- Stay physically fit.
- Be your own spokesperson
- Spend the most time on personnel matters.
- Have a relaxing weekend routine.
- Don’t lunge at the ball.
- Details matter but think big thoughts.
- Understand the process.
- Look at the law or regulation for yourself.
- Organize yourself.
- Make mentorship a priority.
The authors Stavridis and Ancell include an ‘avoid’ list, but hopefully, this list encourages you to purchase and read the book. Five stars all the way.
The Leader’s Bookshelf provides sound advice on how to build an extensive library, lists other books worth reading to improve leadership skills, and analyzes how leaders use what they read to achieve their goals.
